The set design is comical and should get a giggle out of just about anybody. The Bobby Jack Monkey motif design continues in the Bobby Jack Groovy Stripes Bedding (It’s difficult to understand why the link to this set was that it linked us to Ralph Lauren designer bedding sets!).
The boys are not left out of these wonderful and child-appropriate collections. Once again, boys and the nautical theme are suitably represented in the Atlantic Isle Nautical Bedding set by C & F Bedding. Anchors, boats and lighthouses will delight the sailors at heart – young and old. This set would be very appropriate for your houseboat or live-in lighthouse. Also fun and suitable for the young paleontologist is the Dinosaurus Bedding set from Ashley. NASCAR, Formula 1 and young gear heads will have restless nights trying to sleep on their F1 and Formula 1 Bedding by Le Vele. As with both, these depict NASCAR and Formula 1 race cars flying out of the bedspread and into their dreams.
Extra-Special Beds for Special Needs Kids
It should be needless to say that special needs kids deserve as much enjoyment and self-expression in their personal space as every other kid. And yet until recently it’s seemed so difficult to find beds for special needs kids that were anything but sterile, utilitarian and ordinary. Fortunately, interior designers are finally starting to catch wind of this glaring need in children’s bed design and have begun incorporating elements of fun, playfulness, and fantasy into custom special needs kid’s beds.
Parents of special needs kids have complained for years that the only beds available to their children have been cribs and not beds. Not only are special needs cribs expensive and ugly, but they can also be humiliating and disempowering for special needs kids older than toddler age who have enough to work through already without also having a bedroom that makes them feel like they’re still an infant. Other past attempts at special needs beds just look like stalls and hospital beds, none of which inspire any sort of delight in the child forced to sleep there.
That’s why custom special needs beds are such a welcome and attractive alternative. Now a special needs kid can have a custom castle bed, a custom race car bed, a custom tree house bed, a custom mansion bed, or any other custom fantasy bed they can imagine – just like their friends.
There’s no reason, for example, that a child in a wheelchair can’t have a custom theme bed befitting his fondest desires that incorporates into it wheelchair access. Beds for special needs kids may also include extra storage space to accommodate all their special child care items. From building materials to access and safety, every element of day-to-day living with a special needs child can be taken into account in the design and building process.
A key element of custom beds for special needs kids is clear visibility between the bed and the rest of the room, allowing parents to keep a close eye on their special needs child with an easy sightline from the bedroom door as well as allowing the child him or herself to see windows, wall murals, a TV, or any other cherished and crucial bedroom item or element directly from his or her bed.
One key aspect of custom theme beds designed for special needs kids is that any objects or devices critical to the child’s care can be easily incorporated into the design such that it is camouflaged to fit in with the overall fantasy setting. This allows for all the child’s special needs to be taken care of, not least of which is the need to feel “normal” and not have their medical circumstances staring them in the face at every second.
If you’re the parent of a special needs kid, why not get them a bed that is both attractive and appealing to them while let at the same time fitting their extra-special needs.
How to Decorate a Twin Room
Just because they are twins doesn’t mean that they have to like the same things. They will soon tell you that they do not like to share a room with their twin because they don’t like the same things as the other. If your space is too small to accommodate another bedroom then you have to think of some ways that they can each individually express themselves with out clashing with another.
Most boys like bugs so you can create a bug theme in their room that will have them amazed at how many different species there really is. You can start with the ceiling. there are glow-in-the-dark bugs that you can place on the ceiling that will attract their attention. On two of the walls you will want to paint their favorite color, one wall for each of them. Help them to come up with colors that coordinate together so you don’t have a room decor that is distracting.
For the ceiling, you want to use a light blue color to resemble a sky. You want the walls to be primary blue and green in color. Your child can also choose these colors or they can choose a color that matches with the rest of the decor. The floor needs to look like the dirt so paint it a light color brown. You will need bugs crawling up the walls.
If you have hardwood flooring down then you can add some area rugs to the floor. You can find several different colors of boys rugs but make sure that they can match the decor in your twins room. Blue or green is a good color to choose. You may be able to find bug rugs to put down on each side of their bed.
Next, you want to place table colors in blue and green on their kids table. You may want to use a gingham color print or another color to add a little bit of a pattern to the room since you are using all solid colors.
Next, have them walk around the back yard and take pictures of bugs they see. This may take a few days in order to get enough pictures for their room but once you have enough, take them to your local store and have them blown up to an 8×10. Then you can hang them in their room at various places on the wall. You just want to hang up about 8 pictures total so try to get each twin to snap four pictures.
You can purchase some bugs from any toy store and wrap twine or blue and green ribbons around them. These ribbons can go around the bedposts and around the headboard so it looks like the bugs are following a trail around their bed.
The childrens bed sheets should be solid colors of blue and green so you don’t have too many prints in the room. Mix and match brown, blue, and green by placing a blue fitted sheet on one bed and a green flat sheet. Then reverse it on the other bed.
How to Find Perfect Infant Crib Bedding For Your Heirloom Cradle (And Make Sure It’s Safe)
You’re a lover of all things vintage. You pride yourself on thrift store finds. Not only this, but you get involved. You DIY. If a dress is the wrong size, you’ll sew a few seams, shorten the skirt. If a chair needs re-upholstering, you’re just the girl for the job.
Then along comes baby. Well, the promise of baby. The plus sign on that little stick.
Of course you visit your parents and pull down all your own baby gear from the attic. Oh, how sweet! you cry, over and over, sorting through tiny clothes and ragged stuffed animals.
And then–you gasp–there it is! The cradle. The one your grandfather carved by hand. Your father slept in it, you slept in it, and it’s been waiting here for some three decades, just waiting for you to retrieve it, line it with the perfect infant crib bedding, and rock it gently while you sing soft lullabyes to your own little darling.
The thing is, as soon as you discovered baby on board, you developed a new passion for all things CLEAN AND SAFE. You can scrub the cradle down, but is it…safe?
You slept in it, and you’re still here, so probably. But then again, you can remember a family road trip from Connecticut to California where you bopped around the trunk of the family Volvo, nary a seatbelt in sight. Thank the angels of the highway you survived just fine, but times have changed. With knowledge comes responsibility, or something like that.
Plus, the old childrens bed sheets are mildewed, and that’s just not okay.
Okay, safety first.
How To Make Sure The Crib Your Grandfather Made Is Safe For Your Baby
1. How’s the base? Is it wide and solid? A wide and sturdy base allows you to rock the cradle without it tipping over.
2. If there are slats, how far apart are they? They should be no more than 2 3/8 inches apart.
3. Any rough spots or splinters? Exposed hardware? Your hand should be able to rub over every inch comfortably.
4. If there are any latches or locks, make sure they’re secure.
If you’re satisfied that grandpa’s handiwork passes the test, wonderful! If not, there are a number of gorgeous, old-style cribs on the market today. You might not run into them in your average baby furniture store, but there are excellent online sources with a wide variety to choose from.
Next stop, infant crib bedding.
1. It’s very important for the mattress to be a tight fit. There should be no room between the mattress and the cradle floor or walls. Measure your crib. You might find the right size mattress online. You might have to have one specially made. Or, DIY girl, maybe you can size one on your own.
2. Infant crib bedding is not the same as grown-up bedding. You need a mattress pad (to guard against leaky diapers!), a fitted sheet that can be secured snugly, and something to keep your baby warm. Babies can be hurt by a tangle of childrens bed sheets or blankets, so you want bedding that can stay snug around baby–like swaddling blankets, or a sleeper that zips or fastens closed.
There are so many adorable infant bedding sets on the market. This is something you’ll want to buy new, most likely, rather than vintage. Look for super soft cottons. Our advice is to find organic cotton. Combined with the heirloom cradle, it’s the perfect blend of appreciating the past and being mindful of the future.
Kids Decor to Make a Children’s Bedroom Come Alive
Some kids seem to want to change their rooms all the time. As a child I was always rearranging my room, moving my desk and bed to different alignments, placing new posters on my walls or wanting to paint them different colors.
It’s no surprise that kids want to do this. A child’s room in one of the few places that kids feel like they can really control, especially if they feel powerless in other areas of their life. Although they can’t drive a car or decide where they want to live they can influence the look and feel of their own room.
If your child is unhappy with the current look of their room, you don’t have to make extensions or repaint the walls. Adding fairly inexpensive decorative elements can make a huge difference to the decor and to the overall feel of the room.
Elements like bed covers, lamps and floor mats add character to a room and can help kids feel like the room is their own space to express themselves. They are generally affordable options that make a huge impact.
A bed takes up a large part of a bedroom and provides a perfect palette to start revamping a child’s bedroom. Replacing an old quilt cover, comforter or sheet set on your child’s bed can lift a room and breathe new life into the space. Matching drapes can often be added to enhance the theme of the room.
A desk or bedside lamp is another area where small changes can make a huge difference. As a major source of light in the room it draws the eye and with numerous colourful and quirky options can be one of the ways kids can express their character easily.
A floor mat takes up alot of space in the room. Having an old or dull carpet or mat can really bring the mood of a room down. Replacing or covering dull carpet with a bright or distinctive mat can help kids feel like the room is their own space.
Redecorating a room doesn’t necessarily mean spending alot of money. By making small but distinctive changes, you can really help kids feel proud of their room and themselves.
Infant Crib Bedding Safety
When parents leave the hospital with their newborn, the hospital is required to check that the car has a car seat. Parents may be aware of this rule, but not everyone realizes all the safety standards of infant crib bedding and furniture. In mid-October, over 40,000 drop-side cribs were recalled by the U.S. Product Safety Commission after receiving word of several injuries due to faulty side rail detachments. It is vital that parents continually check the U.S. Product Safety Commission’s website for any recalls on products and read up on tips to ensure their child’s safety.
Before purchasing an infant crib, check for peeling paint and splinters. Older cribs may have been originally painted with lead and of course you don’t want your baby hurting himself on any splintered wood. The slat spacing should be no more than 2 and 3/8 inches thick which is about the width of a soda can. Most new cribs shouldn’t have this problem. If the crib has posts, they should be at least 16 inches above the end panels so your baby’s clothing cannot get caught on them. Also make it a habit to frequently check the crib’s hardware to check for loose, missing, or broken parts.
Choosing the correct mattress for both infant and toddler beds is very important. The mattress should always be firm and the baby should always sleep on his back. If a mattress is too soft, the baby can easily roll over and suffocate. The mattress should be 27 by 51 inches and you should not be able to place more than two fingers between the mattress and the crib frame. When your baby reaches about 6 months and can fully stand, adjust the crib height to the lowest setting in case he’s an escape artist. You don’t want him to crawl out of the crib when it’s several feet from the floor.
You might be tempted to leave a toy or a bottle in the crib with your baby at night, but this can pose as a serious danger. Always remove all items when you put him to sleep. Also make sure that the mobile is high enough from the crib so he can’t grab it. If he can stand, the mobile needs to go. Babies have a lot of free time on their hands so it won’t take long for him to figure out how to pull off pieces. Another safety tip is not to fill the infant crib bedding with blankets, childrens bed shees and pillows. All those blankets can easily entangle the baby.
One of the most dangerous cribs is the drop-side crib mentioned earlier. Most manufacturers have completely eliminated making these cribs because they are so dangerous. Unfortunately, many parents still continue to use them. It’s best to simply avoid this type of crib and purchase another crib or a bassinet. Cribs continue to be the leading cause of injury and death among all baby products, so always err on the side of caution. Continue to check toddler beds and toddler furniture too as your child grows to keep him safe.
